What is the best digital camera for a 76 yr old granny….?

…My kodak C340 stopped working after very little use.
I would like a good digital camer about $300 that makes good pictures is lightweight and easy to use. I am not exactly a dummy but sometimes have a problem understanding technical books. I love to make pictures (have 20 grandchildren) of flowers landscapes portraits etc. Am a real camera person so want the best for what I can spend. Thanks

I would suggest the Canon powershot line. They have wonderful image quality and are always at the top of the class by consumer and user reviews.

My folks have and love the sd950IS. Its a great 12mp camera and should last you for many years. its easy to use for the beginner but also has some more advanced features for those more use to using a camera. Its lightweight, but not fragile like some of the other cameras I have tested or tried (esp the coolpix seem very fragile). This is a tad over your $300 limit but I wanted to mention it to give you options.

My sister recently upgraded to the Canon 870IS and she loves it! Its also very easy to use. It now goes for around $250 on Amazon, and they offer the free shipping on it which is nice. It has a wide ISO range so you can use it in a wide range of places. A great camera for the money. its 8mp and for most people that really is more than enough. It offers a very nice wide angle lens on it so you get better landscape shots as well.

I carry and use a Canon G9 as my emergency camera. I keep it in my truck and with me when fishing since I sometimes dont have my bigger cameras handy or wilt me. Its a WONDERFUL camera, and I see why it has won so many awards! It also has a very good video mode and takes wonderful images as well. Its over your budget, but better to be over informed than under informed…

If you wanted to stay under $300 get the 870IS, if you dont mind going $30-40 over, get the 950 IS.

Hope this helps. any ?? let me know.

Also for good books on photography and photo editing, look at the Scott Kelby books, he writes them so realy people and photographers can understand them, not computer nerds!

Arguably their finest album, this follow-up to Opiate showcases Tool at their best, assisted by clean, crisp production, without the muddiness of Aenima. Edgy guitar riffs are complemented by spitting, heavy bass, especially on “Sober” and “Crawl Away”. Lyrically, Tool are at their vitriolic best, targeting religious hypocrisy (“Intolerance,” “Sober”; always a popular theme), the loss of innocence…

First, take this quiz!Do I need a release for a photo of someone I took in public?Should I get a release even if the person is unrecognizable? Is a release necessary if I make a profit selling a photo of a person?Do I need releases for photos of buildings? Are releases necessary for pictures of people from other countries?I took a lot of pictures as a hobby, and now I want to sell them. Do I need releases for all my people pictures? If I have no plans for a photo when I take it, should I get a release anyway?Does it make a difference if the subject was paid to be in the picture?Give yourself one point for “Yes,” and two points for “No.” In fact, make it three points. If you scored higher than zero, you have a lot to learn about model releases, because you can’t answer these questions without more information. How will the photo be used? By whom? Can the subject be associated with an idea, product, or service? Until you know that, the question of releases can’t be answered. As the photographer, you need to understand your buyer’s concerns in order to make savvy decisions about how you market your photos and to whom. A Grand and Bold Thing: An Extraordinary New Map of the Universe Ushering In A New Era of Discovery

A Grand and Bold Thing: An Extraordinary New Map of the Universe Ushering In A New Era of Discovery

$0.99

LATE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, what had been a fevered pace of discovery in astronomy for many years had slowed. The Hubble Space Telescope continued to produce an astonishing array of images, but the study of the universe was still fractured into domains: measuring the universe’s expansion rate, the evolution of galaxies in the early universe, the life and death of stars, the search for extrasolar planets, the quest to understand the nature of the elusive dark matter. So little was understood, still, about so many of the most fundamental questions, foremost among them: What was the overall structure of the universe? Why had stars formed into galaxies, and galaxies into massive clusters? What was needed, thought visionary astronomer Jim Gunn, recently awarded the National Medal of Science, was a massive survey of the sky, a kind of new map of the universe that would be so rich in detail and cover such a wide swath of space, be so grand and bold, that it would allow astronomers to see the big picture in a whole new way. So was born the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, a remarkable undertaking bringing together hundreds of astronomers and launching a new era of supercharged astronomical discovery, an era of “e-science” that has taken astronomy from the lonely mountaintop observatory to the touch of your fingertips. Critically acclaimed science writer Ann Finkbeiner tells the inside story of the Sloan and how it is revolutionizing astronomy. The Sloan stitched together images of deep space taken over the course of five years, providing a remarkably detailed, three-dimensional map of a vast territory of the universe, all digitized and downloadable for easy searching on a personal computer, and available not only to professional astronomers but to the public as well. Bringing together for the first time images of many millions of galaxies—including the massive structure known as the Sloan Great Wall of galaxies, never seen

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. AACS encryption key controversy

AACS encryption key controversy

$58.99

A controversy surrounding the AACS cryptographic key arose in April 2007 when the Motion Picture Association of America and the Advanced Access Content System Licensing Administrator, LLC (AACS LA) began issuing demand letters to websites publishing a 128-bit (16-byte) number, represented in hexadecimal as 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0 (commonly referred to as 09 F9), which is one of the cryptographic keys for HD DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. The letters demanded the immediate removal of the key and any links to it, citing the anti-circumvention provisions of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). In response to widespread Internet postings of the key, the AACS LA issued various press statements, praising those websites that complied with their requests as acting in a “responsible manner”, warning that “legal and technical tools” were adapting to the situation. The controversy was further escalated in early May 2007, when aggregate news site Digg received a DMCA cease and desist notice and then removed numerous articles on the matter and banned users reposting the information.

This sparked what some describe as a digital revolt, or “cyber-riot”, in which users posted and spread the key on Digg, and throughout the Internet en masse . And I Feel Fine…: The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 [DVD]

$24.98

It’s hardly as if R.E.M.’s glory days of the ’80s haven’t been compiled before — just after they left I.R.S. for Warner, the Eponymous collection appeared in 1988, and over the years more collections have appeared in both domestic and foreign markets — but 2006’s And I Feel Fine…: The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 is the first collection since Eponymous to be assembled with a purpose. At 21 tracks, it’s nearly twice as long as the 1988 effort (and it’s also five tracks longer than the good EMI Europe 1998 disc The Best of R.E.M.) and the extra space is used well, helping to sketch a complete picture of the band through singles, album tracks, and concert standards. Which isn’t to say everything great that R.E.M. recorded in the ’80s — it’s a rich body of work, so there will naturally be great songs left behind when it’s being condensed down to a 21-track collection — but this has all the major songs (“Radio Free Europe,” “[Don't Go Back to] Rockville,” “Gardening at Night,” “Pretty Persuasion,” “Driver 8,” “The One I Love,” “Fall on Me,” “It’s the End of the World as We Know It [And I Feel Fine]“), making it about as a good single-disc overview and introduction to R.E.M.’s peak years as could be imagined. Only two things would make it better: chronological sequencing, since the group’s growth truly was impressive, and the inclusion of their cover of the Clique’s “Superman,” which was a college radio standard throughout the late ’80s. “Superman” does turn up on the second disc of the deluxe edition of And I Feel Fine… That second disc is a hodgepodge of rarities, demos, alternate takes, live versions, single mixes and remixes, album tracks, and favorite songs of Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe. Although most of these rarities have appeared somewhere else before, there’s a healthy selection of previously unreleased cuts that makes this more than worthwhile for hardcore fans. Of these, the highlight is the origin…

 Art, Word And Image

Art, Word And Image

$39

What does it mean to say that a painting has been invaded by language? Art, Word and Image answers this question by exploring how visual images and writing can work in dialogue in an artwork. Whether the picture frame is encroached upon by doodlings, as with Adolf Wolfli’’s seemingly irrational scribbles, or a plea to spirituality is blazoned across a vast canvas, as in the moving images of Colin McCahon, we can be sure that words here have a special meaning, one beyond everyday communication. Art, Word and Image, one of the first books to examine the use of language in art, is constructed around three major chronological essays by renowned scholars John Dixon Hunt, David Lomas, and Michael Corris. Their essays chart the use and significance of words in art–from Classical Greece through the Middle Ages and Renaissance to modern digital media.

Babe [2 Discs] [Includes Digital Copy] [Blu-ray/DVD]

Babe [2 Discs] [Includes Digital Copy] [Blu-ray/DVD]

$19.98

A young pig fights convention to become a sheep dog — or, rather, sheep pig — in this charming Australian family film, which became an unexpected international success due to superior special effects and an intelligent script. The title refers to the name bestowed on a piglet soon after his separation from his family, when he finds himself on a strange farm. Confused and sad, Babe is adopted by a friendly dog and slowly adjusts to his new home. Discovering that the fate of most pigs is the dinner table, Babe devotes himself to becoming a useful member of the farm by trying to learn how to herd sheep, despite the skepticism of the other animals and the kindly but conventional Farmer Hoggett (James Cromwell). Because technically impeccable animatronics and computer graphics allow the farm animals to converse easily among themselves, first-time director Chris Noonan can treat the film’s menagerie as actual characters, playing scene not for cuteness but for real emotions. The result is often surprisingly touching, with Noonan and George Miller’s script, based on Dick King-Smith’s children’s book and, indirectly, a true story, seamlessly combining gentle whimsy and sincere feeling. These same qualities are embodied by in Cromwell’s beautifully understated performance as Farmer Hoggett, which anchors the film. Despite its unlikely premise and low profile, Babe’s inspirational story was embraced by audiences and critics, and the movie became an international sleeper that won an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. It was followed in 1999 by the less successful Babe: Pig in the City. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

 Bacewicz: Music for String Orchestra

Bacewicz: Music for String Orchestra

$21.98

To say the music of Grazyna Bacewicz is utterly unknown outside her native Poland would be a bit of an exaggeration, but only a bit. Though she ranks as one of the finest Polish composers of the generation after Szymanowski and before Lutoslawski, Bacewicz’s music is rarely programmed and even more rarely recorded. This 2009 Hyperion disc with Ronald Corp leading the New London Orchestra is especially welcome since it contains four of her works, two of them premiere recordings. Three of the pieces here, including the premieres, are scored for string orchestra — the 1935 Sinfonietta, the 1946 Symphony, and the 1948 Concerto — while the fourth describes its scoring with its title: Music for strings, trumpets, and percussion (1958). Though their essentially tonal harmonic language grows more austere over time, all four works are fundamentally abstract music filled with the overwhelming need to communicate. Bacewicz’s themes are always urgently expressive, and her harmonies are always purposefully moving somewhere. The program starts with her melodically appealing concerto, followed by her vivacious sinfonietta and serious symphony, and concludes with her moody and mysterious Music for strings, trumpets, and percussion, giving a fair picture of Bacewicz’s development as a composer. The performances by Corp and his London musicians are amazingly secure and thoroughly enjoyable, and Hyperion’s digital sound is clear and cool, but evocative. Anyone interested in mid-20th century modernism should by all means try this disc. ~ James Leonard, Rovi

Best of Merle Haggard [Capitol 2009]

Best of Merle Haggard [Capitol 2009]

$9.99

As early as 1972, Merle Haggard hits albums bore titles that cracked jokes at the use of “best” in their names — Truly the Best of Merle Haggard and The Best of the Best of Merle Haggard being his second two compilations — so way down the line in 2009, after decades of albums called “The Best” and just three years after Capitol put out an excellent, generous single-disc called Hag: The Best of Merle Haggard, the label has stripped down to barebones for 2009’s The Best of Merle Haggard. The set is as basic as its title: just 10 tracks, all hits, packaged in a thin “eco-friendly” sleeve that feels like an advertisement for its accompanying digital download version. The song selections ever so slightly favor ’70s material, with “Soldier’s Last Letter” and “Everybody’s Had the Blues” standing in for “The Bottle Let me Down” and “Sing Me Back Home,” which may feel a bit off to some tastes, but everything here is superb, so it’s a worthwhile sampler even if 2006’s Hag paints a fuller, richer picture. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Bring in the Peacocks . . . or Memoirs of a Hollywood Producer

$84.81

I was fortunate to be a part of the Golden Years of Hollywood albeit the tail end of it. MGM was the largest and most lucrative film studio in the world. This giant of a studio made one movie a week in its heyday. With stars who were stars. And story lines that you could follow without the aid of computers and digital innovations. Louis B. Mayer had just been dethroned and a new group of filmmakers emerged. That’s when I joined MGM. This book follows my career from this point until my very last film entitled DANGEROUS LIAISONS and retired having received an Academy Award nomination for the best picture of 1988. This book, hopefully, will reflect the happenings that occurs during the making of a film – some sad – some fascinating but definitely extremely humorous. This is raw Hollywood as it was Hank Moomjean
